Theatre Woodstock is launching its fall season with what promises to be a “romping show that tackles sex, love, science, family, dying bees and the artificial insemination of turkeys.”
Described by troupe members as a “laugh-out-loud comedy with a huge honeyed heart,” The Birds and The Bees is also suggested for mature audiences.
The play delves into the relationship between Sarah, a turkey farmer who just left her husband, and Gail, her beekeeper mother. With Gail more concerned about her dying bees than with her daughter’s problems, the two struggle to adjust to their new reality. Things are further complicated with the introductions of Earl, an eccentric neighbour, and Ben, a handsome, young researcher.
“As in life, things don’t always go to plan,” director Kim DiLello said in a release, “so we adapt and make a new plan, as Sarah discovers in this play.
“The themes of this show may mirror some of those in your own life, or in the lives of people you know – love, loss, infertility and strained parent-child relationships and, on a larger scale, the environmental issues that affect us all.”
The Birds and The bees opens Friday, Sept. 15, with a 7:30 p.m. performance and continues through to Sept. 24, including two Sunday matinee shows at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Market Centre box office or online at theatrewoodstock.com.
The production does contain adult situations and some strong language, so Theatre Woodstock is suggesting age 14 and older as appropriate.
Theatre Woodstock is celebrating more than seven decades in the community. The Market Centre Theatre is located in the city’s downtown at 22 Reeve St. The box office is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The box office is also open two hours prior to every scheduled show.
