From again cyborgs to a posthumous collaboration between a mother and daughter to colourful cardboard bunnies, the Woodstock Art Gallery is offering three intriguing exhibitions during this week’s March Break.
In the main gallery, Inspired by … Mother and Daughters pairs the stunning mixed-media artwork of Irma Makariunaite with the geometric paintings and fibre art of her late mother, Rita Giedre-Buolva Forrest. This exhibition, gallery officials said in a release, highlights the enduring and powerful connection between the two artists and the special “transfer of knowledge and artistic skill” from other to daughter.
Terry Graff: Avian Cyborgs is an exhibit that showcases sculptures, painting and collages that explore the complicated relationship between nature and technology. Graff, the artist, has been putting together sculptural assemblages of ducks using parts and scrap metal since the early 1970s. Since then, avian cyborgs have become persistent motifs in his work, as well as the inspiration for this national touring exhibitions that is on display in the Dr. Leonard Reeves Gallery.
The final of the three exhibits — I Am ……. Driven by Colour — is housed in the second-floor Community Gallery. Artist Roxanne Tochor has transformed this gallery into a vibrant and fantastical world that is perfect for family visits. An interactive installation, the exhibit is made primarily with cardboard and other reclaimed materials. Many of the ideas in the display come from Tochor’s sketchbooks over the past 15 years and her passion for colour.
Visitors will have an opportunity to meet one of the artists, Makariunaite, on Wednesday, March 13, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Future meet-the-artist opportunities are slated for March 28, April 11, April 25, May 9, May 23, June 6 and June 18.
Families looking for some March Break fun are also invited to drop by the gallery on Wednesday, March 13, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for free art activities.
